I woke up early this morning and jumped onto IndependentMail.com to see what was going on in our little city. Something caught my eye about "Catergate", a scandal involving some of our county council members. I ended up sitting in front of the computer for 2 hours reading and re-reading some of the stuff on the newspapers website, which includes the SLED investigation report (in PDF format). This is some crazy shit thats going down here in A-town. I encourage everyone here to read up on it at independentmail.com (http://independentmail.com/news/2007/jul/07/complete-catergate-case-files/).

I'd like to know what some of my fellow Surf members think of this. I don't know why I found this so intriguing, but it kept me interested and reading for 2 hours this morning. I can't believe this kind of shit happens here in Anderson.....i mean, I could understand it happening in Washington DC, but HERE???? It's friggin' nuts.

Hopefully some of you will chime in on this and we can start a discussion on it, because, as everyone knows, politics is always fun to argue! haha

Oh, and PROPS must go out to Surfmember (and IndependentMail.com administrator) Nick Charalambous, The Cocklebur, for helping bring this matter to light for the citizens (and voters) in the county. I'm glad I got a chance to hear about this. It makes me sad/angry to think about what kind of people WE voted into office and how they're representing their districts.

I've only skimmed through about a third of one of the .pdf files. So far, it seems to be just a case of some vaguely harassing e-mails and letters. Can you give us a low-down of the situation? There's a lot to go through.

I would like to comment on one letter listed. This racist idiot writes:

racist wrote:
As a tax payer in Anderson County I hear that the council is going to name a street after MLK There is already a holiday for this man and black history month how much moe do we have to endure.

Oh, the horror of having to endure a street being renamed after a NEGRO!!!!

racist wrote:
MLK was a communist, adultress, and caused riots everywhere he went and yall want to honor a man like this. If yall do this then there should be a street named after Robert E. Lee. Lee was a good christain (sic) man and should be honored also.

False, possibly true, and false. If it's true that there isn't a street named after Robert E Lee, then I'm surprised. Just a few blocks from me are a few streets named after various confederate generals, including Nathan Bedford Forrest, founder of the KKK. You'd think that that would be enough for this illiterate racist.

Well, basically SLED was asked to investigate a bunch of harrassing letters and phone calls that seemed to center around Joey Preston. Seems that every county council member received one or more of these letters....all except one, the person who popular opinion believes is actually behind the phone calls/letters: Cindy Wilson. Rumors of Mr. Preston's alleged affair with a county worker started circulating, his credit card number (on a hotel receipt) was circulated around, and eventually someone (tied in to Mrs. Wilson) called in a false 911 call to report some "teenagers drinking at Cater's Lake", which was actually a call to get police to the area to bust Mr. Preston and an "unidentified blonde woman" in the act. There's a lot more to it, but suffice it to say that it seems to all revolve around Cindy Wilson's attempt to ruin the political (and private) life of her nemesis, Joey Preston. At least that's my opinion of it. It's strange, but entertaining to read about.

As far as the idiot racist, I personally believe that MLK was a catalyst for change during the time when this country needed it. I have no problem honoring the man (as many cities do) by naming a road after him. And Robert E. Lee was, in my opinion, a great statesman (he claimed Virginia as the reason for his commitment to the war, not the entire south), and reading up on the man, he was a military genius. I wouldn't mind seeing him honored either. Hell, while they're at it, they should name a street after me too! haha

I certainly don't have a problem with streets being named after MLK or REL. I wouldn't even consider a street being named after Bedford Forrest to be something that I had to "endure".

Wait a minute... was that idiot racist letter from Cindy Wilson pretending to be somebody else, or was it actually from somebody else?

Just from all of the info on the situation it seems just like u said, Cindy Wilson is behind it all. I'm sure she is smart enough not to send the letters herself or to take a direct take in it herself but she has someone obviously doin it for her.

We need someone with investigatory insights to crack this case wide open...lol

I bet in the end we find out that Joey Preston stood up Cindy Wilson at their prom or something like that...geez.

The whole MLK road thing, fine by me, makes no difference really as long as the city MAINTAINS it better than most of the roads here..

arrgghh...nothing but negative here from me...sorry..
